Whately Agricultural Commission advances school garden plans and farm pamphlet overhaul.
Other Committee · Meeting of February 9, 2026
Whately Agricultural Commission advances school garden plans and farm pamphlet overhaul. The commission unanimously approved its minutes at the February 9 meeting and heard a detailed report on a recent site visit to the elementary school, where members are planning roughly six raised garden beds with a potential work day the weekend of April 18 or 19. One member proposed connecting the school garden to the town's Giving Garden by having students grow seed potatoes for donation, and another identified third-grade teacher Amy Tivitz as likely taking the lead at the school.
The group reviewed its existing farm outreach pamphlet alongside examples from Hatfield and Deerfield, agreeing to reprint the current version for the coming season while planning a redesign, possibly for 2027, that would feature student artwork and a farm map. A brief Simmers Creamery update confirmed the property had written to the Planning Board pledging to return to compliance with local zoning.
