Whately's Select Board and Library Board of Trustees jointly appointed Carrie Etchells to a vacant elected library trustee seat. The Library Board of Trustees voted 4-0 by roll call, with trustees James, John and Kathy voting in person and trustee Cindy voting by phone after nearly 30 minutes of failed callback attempts, including one case of mistaken identity: "we just said Alex... we didn't know who Alex was." The Select Board then voted 3-0, with Chair McDaniel, Tim Hilchey and Blake Gilmore all voting aye under a process one member called noticeably "smooth" compared to the trustees' earlier vote. The appointment, made under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 41, Section 11, keeps Etchells on the board until the next annual town election.
