Whately Planning Board unanimously adopts long-awaited "Bright Futures" comprehensive plan
Whately Planning Board unanimously approves "Bright Futures" comprehensive plan and skips July meeting.
WHATELY -- June 30, 2026, Whately Planning Board unanimously approves "Bright Futures" comprehensive plan and skips July meeting. The board voted 4-0 Tuesday to adopt the multi-year comprehensive plan developed with the Franklin Regional Council of Governments, which synthesized survey responses from nearly a quarter of all Whately households into recommendations covering agriculture, housing, land use, transportation, and economic development. Planner Megan Rhodes of FRCOG told the board the document is advisory, not regulatory, and that consultant work referenced in the plan would be pursued through grants rather than town funds; she cited a pending culvert-replacement funding lead on Christian Lane as an early example of the plan's practical value. The board also held an informal discussion on whether food trucks could operate at the town-owned commercial parcel at 268 State Road, with the chair opining the use would likely qualify as takeout or drive-in food service requiring a ZBA special permit, and directing town staff to consult the building inspector. A brief discussion on social consumption cannabis facilities ended with consensus that no action was warranted given the absence of any community demand. The board voted unanimously to cancel its July 28 meeting if no applications are received by July 20, setting August 25 as its next confirmed meeting date.
