School Committee 2026-10-06 Part 2 · Meeting of October 6, 2026
Whately School Committee adopted a policy routing ICE paperwork off campus and reviewed MCAS data showing equity gaps. The committee voted unanimously to accept a revised policy, filed under code ACL, directing federal immigration agents to process paperwork at the Deerfield Police Department rather than on school grounds, and rescinded the prior JAG-coded policy. A staff presenter, identified as Laura, reported that 33 of Whately Elementary's 69 students, 48 percent, are now coded "high needs," and that only 31 percent of girls met ELA expectations, reversing the typical pattern.
The superintendent flagged $500,000 to $750,000 in coming roof and boiler costs and said a regional Franklin County Technical School vote could squeeze the town's capital capacity. A first reading of a new four-town superintendent's agreement, changing joint-meeting voting to one vote per committee, is expected for a vote at the April joint meeting.
